Falls Prevention Program – what is it?

The Falls Prevention Program is a free program for older Tasmanians who are living with – or at risk of developing – mobility issues and at greater risk of a fall. The program aims to help you to reduce the risk of falls through education and exercise. This program is designed to support you to feel better in your body, build strength, move better and get a confidence boost.

Program Overview

The Falls Prevention Program:

  • Completely free to participate in
  • 6 weeks in length – including weekly:
    • Face-to-face exercise and education classes (90 minutes)
    • Phone coaching sessions (up to 30-minutes) 
  • Face-to-face classes are offered in:
    • Burnie
    • Central Coast
    • Circular Head
    • Devonport
    • Wynyard
  • Learn from skilled and engaging health professionals including physiotherapists and accredited exercise physiologists.

What this program covers

  • Risk Identification Skills: Participants will be able to identify fall risk factors in their daily lives. This includes home hazards and risky behaviours.
  • Balance and Strength Improvement: Participants will learn exercises that improve their ability to prevent a fall. These exercises help stability, strength, and mobility.
  • Environmental Modification Knowledge: Participants will learn how to assess their living spaces and make changes that reduce fall hazards.
  • Emergency Response Preparedness: Participants will develop and practice an action plan for what to do in the event of a fall. This includes learning how to get up, call for help, and access emergency services.
